With the ball traveling at speeds up to 200 mph in some of the pro matches, you don’t need to read a racquetball book to realize the damage a wrongly hit ball at that speed could cause if it hit their eye! Wearing racquetball glasses is essential and will keep you from having serious eye injuries in the case that your opponent mis-hits the ball. Without wearing racquetball goggles, a racquetball can hit your eye and cause it to detach from the retina and there is no way to fix it. It is much better to have a big red mark from the racquetball glasses around your forehead after being hit by a ball.
Wearing racquetball eyewear in a tournament is mandatory. The rules in the United States say that you can receive a technical and loss of point for event warming up without wearing protective racquetball glasses. The International Racquetball Pro Tour allows their players to warm-up without racquetball eyewear, but they must put on their racquetball glasses before the match starts.
If you have to have your prescription glasses while you play, since they are not approved racquetball eyewear, you will need to use racquetball goggles when playing in any sanctioned event. These types of racquetball goggles are bulky and a little harder to see out of since you are looking through your glasses lenses and through the lenses in the racquetball goggles.
Some companies now also make prescription racquetball glasses that are approved for tournament play, and seem like they are much easier to use than the bulky racquetball goggles that are sometimes used in place of getting special racquetball glasses made for you.
For maximum visibility, most of the pros now use racquetball eyewear that has a solid plastic shield across both eyes instead of racquetball glasses that have separate lenses for each eye.
The bottom line and the basic racquetball rules say: No matter how you think you look at the racquet ball club wearing your racquetball goggles or other racquetball eyewear, always use them!
