Learn about Racquetball Grips

Basic racquetball rules covering the racket and grip.

Having a good racquetball grip on your racquetball racquet is essential. You can have the best racket out there, but without a good racquetball glove and racquetball grip combination, it won’t help much once your hand begins to perspire.

Racquetball grips come in two main types: A wrap grip, commonly used in tennis and squash, and a rubber slide-on racquetball grip. Different gloves work better depending on the type of racquetball grip you use. It’s a good idea to experiment with different racquetball grips and gloves to find the combination that works best for you.

If you are a tournament player, it is always a good idea to make sure to take an extra racquetball grip with you, especially if you are a player that likes to dive a lot. Diving tends to wear-out the racquetball grip much faster than normal play.

A basic racquetball rule states that the length of your racquetball rackets can be no longer than 22 inches. Some players who prefer using the rubber slide on racquetball grips prefer to leave the end overhanging off the end of the handle to slightly extend the length of the racquet, giving them a small advantage. This extra overage of the racquetball grip can cause you to be in violation of this basic racquetball rule and in a United States sanctioned racquetball tournament, will result in a forfeit of 1 game, so be careful! This basic racquetball rule was added because players were using rubber racquetball grips and allowing them to extend several inches past the end of the racquet giving them a longer racquet, more reach, and an unfair advantage to other players.

My favorite racquetball grips are the rubber racquetball grips made by Python Racquetball Grips. They come in many different colors and are easy to install and very inexpensive. Remember if you get a pull-on rubber grip to follow the basic racquetball rules and do not leave it overhanging!
